Why Your Science Presentation Sucks...and How to Fix it
Let’s face it, explaining your scientific research so that it’s accurate and comprehensible can be hard. However, explaining it in a way that’s engaging, interesting and that hooks an audience from start to finish is even harder. While we get training on the former, rarely do we get training on the latter.
In this interactive workshop, you will learn:
How delivering engaging presentations can boost your career
The importance of understanding your audience
Ways to make your science sound more interesting
Tips to make your presentation stand out
Strategies to improve your presenting skill
This workshop will be delivered by zoom for the EMCR network at the research institutes of University of Queensland (AIBN, IMB, QBI)

5th International UV & Skin Cancer Prevention Conference 2021
Can a virtual reality experience change behaviour and prevent skin cancer?
Presenter: Dr Elke Hacker, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia & Dr Ken Dutton-Regester, Excite Science
Summary: Skin cancer is preventable, however young adults in Australia still get regularly sunburnt. Our challenge is to develop new, innovative and creative ways to reach people with health messaging. This study explored the potential of a virtual reality (VR) game to engage, educate and elicit sun protection behaviours in young adults. The VR game was created using a user-centred design approach and tested by 20 end users in focus groups to gather feedback on tolerance, safety, satisfaction with use and behaviour change. VR technology may provide a channel to deliver health behaviour changing experiences to young adults in an immersive and entertaining format.
